A West Point cadet from Valparaiso is among the nine soldiers killed during a training accident near Fort Hood, Texas last week. 21-year-old Cadet Mitchell Alexander Winey was scheduled to graduate from the United States Military Academy at West Point in 2018. The tactical vehicle crash that claimed his life last week remains under investigation. Back home Gov. Mike Pence has directed flags at state buildings be lowered to half-staff in Winey’s honor.
