The Plymouth Police Department is updating the public on an alleged attack on the Greenway Trail, but an investigation has revealed something much different.
The case was initially reported on the evening of May 26th when Plymouth Police received a call regarding a possible battery victim being treated at St. Joseph Regional Medical Center.
The victim allegedly told investigators he was walking his dog along the Greenway Trail in Plymouth near Riverside Intermediate School. That’s when the victim says an individual wearing a helmet and carrying a baseball bat allegedly struck him several times, knocking him to the ground. Two other individuals jumped in on the action, punching and kicking the victim. A wallet was allegedly stolen and, according to the incident report, the assailants threatened the victim to remain on the ground before fleeing in a green pickup truck.
Plymouth Mayor Mark Senter responded to public outcry on social media, initially saying the result of the investigation may not conclude the way it was initially reported. Still, the Mayor said his office had the resources at its disposal to help improve security at all of the city’s parks, but especially the Greenway Trail, and would look into the matter.
Investigators have announced in a press release they believe the assault was not a random attack. Instead, the attack is said to have actually occurred in the town of Bourbon, not Plymouth.
The Police Department says they have identified possible suspects, and have questioned those involved in the case. The report has been forwarded to the Prosecutor’s office for a review of potential charges.
