Indiana could make an exception to its ban on Sunday alcohol sales this year to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the greatest spectacle in racing. State Rep. Tom Dermody, R-LaPorte, sponsored a bill to allow commemorative alcohol bottles to be sold the Sunday of the Indianapolis 500 to celebrate the 100th running of the race.
The measure passed in the House by a vote of 89-6. Dermody stresses it would be a one-time allowance strictly to help celebrate the race.
It would allow those Indy 500 patrons to purchase and leave with a keepsake bottle. The Indianapolis Motor Speedway would be allowed to sell alcohol in commemorative bottles between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. on May 29, 2016.
The bill is now awaiting Gov. Mike Pence’s signature.
