The Plymouth Common Council has decided to move forward with an ordinance that may be to the benefit of retiring fire and EMS personnel.
The move follows action taken recently by the Common Council allowing retiring Plymouth City police officers a chance to purchase their weapon from the City upon retirement while considered in good standing.
That ordinance received passage after a bit of debate over whether the City of Plymouth could indeed take such a step. The initial consideration was to gift the service weapon to retiring police officers, but the idea evolved to allowing the officer to purchase the weapon during succeeding meetings.
This week, an ordinance amendment to the original retiring police officer language would expand the provision to retiring firefighters and city EMS personnel. The provision would allow them to purchase their helmet and boots from the City of Plymouth upon retirement.
The Plymouth Common Council adopted the ordinance amendment on second and third reading, unanimously.
