December and January rank highest when it comes to thefts, but there are some steps you can take to keep your home and belongings secure this holiday season. That’s according to State Farm, citing information from 2014.
They say one of the best ways to prevent burglaries is simply to remember the basics, like locking your doors and windows when you go out and keeping track of any sets of spare keys. Some other tips include keeping money, jewelry, or other valuables out of the view of windows and not telling strangers about your daily routines or posting vacation plans on social media. State Farm also recommends taking steps to make your home look occupied at all times and making sure all your locks are working properly.
According to State Farm’s nationwide data from 2014, January had the highest number of building and personal property theft claims, followed by December. Last December, Indiana ranked eighth nationwide in number of theft claims. However, State Farm says the average number of theft claims per month nationwide has been dropping over the past five years.
