Plymouth Opens Warming Shelter

news-3Widespread power outages last night prompted officials in Plymouth to open a warming shelter for displaced residents. Space is available at the fire station for anyone who needs a place to stay until their utility service is restored.

It’s unclear how long that will take. Utility crews worked through the night to repair lines downed by strong winds and ice yesterday. NIPSCO is still reporting thousands of outages across its entire service territory, which stretches from the Illinois border to near Fort Wayne.

Officials aren’t able to provide an estimate as to when power will be restored, but you can find information here about NIPSCO outages.

We’re in for another cold one today, with high temperatures only expected in the upper 30s. However the forecast doesn’t include the wind gusts and freezing precipitation that created yesterday’s problems. Power company officials say storms like those can be more damaging than major summer weather events. Remember, downed power lines should be treated as though they are live. Do not try to drive around them or move trees or other debris.
