The Culver-Union Township Public Library is wrapping up its hundredth year this month.
Library director Colleen McCarty says there will be events throughout the day tomorrow to celebrate, “At 9:00, we have holiday story time and caroling with our children’s Librarian Miss Jill at Millers Merry Manor. The children at the library, at the story hours have been coloring bookmarks.” She says the visit will let members of the community who aren’t able to visit the library take part in the celebration. Families are welcome to attend.
At 10:00, the celebration moves to the library, where kids will have a chance to visit with Santa until noon. Then, Stage II will be on hand to perform Christmas songs, followed by an awards ceremony at 1:00, “We had an Andrew Carnegie Essay Contest with the middle school students in Union Township and we have three winners, and they will be announced and they will receive their prizes at that time,” McCarty says. “At 1:15, we’re very pleased that Jeff Kenny is going to be here, and he’s going to give a PowerPoint presentation called ‘Pages of History: the First 100 Years of the Culver-Union Township Public Library.'”
McCarty says there are also some ongoing activities planned, “Throughout the day, the Friends of the Library will be having a book sale in the basement of the old Carnegie Library, which room is now called the Carnegie Room, so that will be ongoing all day. And in that same room, we will be displaying a quilt which was made by community members, with all kinds of squares having to do with the history of the library or favorite books.” The Friends of the Library will also be providing refreshments.
The library opened in December of 1915 and is still in use, although with a very large addition. Library officials have been commemorating its centennial with events throughout the past year.
