More Americans will be traveling for the Thanksgiving holiday.
AAA says 46.9-million Americans will journey 50 miles or more between November 25th and 29th. That’s the largest number of Thanksgiving commuters since 2007, but still marks the seventh year of consecutive growth in holiday travelers.
AAA has been reporting on holiday travel trends for more than two decades.
Indiana saw a larger uptick than the nation as a whole. More than 1-million Hoosiers will travel for the Thanksgiving holiday this year. That’s more than a 1-percent increase compared to 2014.
Air travel is effectively flat compared to the previous year, but according to AAA’s survey, driving will remain the most popular method of transportation. 42-million out of the nearly 47-million holiday travelers planning to make a trip will use a car this year.
Part of the reason for the increase is being attributed to this year’s unusually low gas prices. Indiana’s current statewide gas price average is $1.98 per gallon. That’s a drop of nearly $1 compared to this period one year ago.
Likewise, AAA says they expect to rescue more than 300-thousand motorists during the Thanksgiving travel period.
