Marshall County Relay for Life Hosts Luminaria Celebration

Relay for LifeLast night, Marshall County residents had the opportunity to honor cancer survivors as well as to remember those who’ve lost their battle with the disease.

The Marshall County Relay for Life held a Luminaria Celebration at the Marshall County Courthouse. As part of the event, participants placed luminaries along the sidewalks near the courthouse.

Erin Metsker, one of the event’s organizers, says helping out with the Relay for Life has been a rewarding experience for her, after losing both a coworker and a parent to cancer, “It’s such a helpless, helpless feeling, and to know that you can somehow give back, you can support, you can be there for other people in your community who are going through the same thing, is absolutely rewarding.”

She says the Luminaria Celebration’s a big part of the Relay for Life itself, but they wanted to hold an extra event in order to raise awareness, “We decided to have a Luminaria Ceremony outside of the actual relay that takes place in the summer basically to try and promote the relay itself. Last year was our first experience with the relay, and we just saw a lot of potential for the relay to grow within our community.”

Next year’s Marshall County Relay for Life is scheduled for June 18 in Plymouth. For more information, visit RelayForLife.org/MarshallCountyIN.
