A group of Ancilla College students, faculty, and staff traveled to Gary to help organize shoes to be given to those in need in Northwest Indiana and around the world.
Ancilla’s 12-person team sorted 1675 pairs of shoes at the Sojourner Truth House, which provides food, clothing, and shelter for homeless and at-risk women. The shelter’s sponsored by the Poor Handmaids of Jesus Christ, the same religious order in charge of Ancilla College. The shoes that were in new condition will be given to the clients of Sojourner Truth House, while the rest were sent to Soles in Step, an organization that repairs and re-purposes shoes for poor areas around the world.
Ancilla campus minister Albert Escanilla says the event was designed not only to help the community, but also to give students a greater understanding of the importance of serving others.
