First graders at Washington Discovery Academy in Plymouth are putting what they learn in the classroom into action by collecting shoes to be sent to developing countries.
Teacher Jennifer Knebel says the project will also help a family in the process of adopting a girl with special needs from China, “I went to school with the father’s sister, so she posted on her Facebook, ‘Hey, my brother and his wife are trying to adopt a little girls from China and they’re doing a shoe drive.’ So then I got in contact with the family and kind of presented it to my team and then the kids, and the kids were really excited about it. Their goal is 10,000 pounds, and I think they’re at like 7,600 right now.”
They’re collecting all types of shoes in any condition. The drive runs through November 2, but the students won’t be done trying to help others. They’re asking for the community to take part in a blood drive November 19. It’s all part of the school’s project-based learning effort.
An update on the projects was presented to the Plymouth School Board during the “Focus on Learning” portion of Tuesday’s meeting.
