Marshall County is considering hiring a full-time law clerk.

Superior Court II Judge Dean Colvin appeared before the County Council Monday to make the request, “What I’m seeking to do is hire a full-time law clerk to assist the court in its day-to-day functions. We’ve had a part-time law clerk since the time that I’ve sat on the bench over the last several years, and what I’m looking for is to employ someone full-time to develop some consistency with regards to the use of the law clerk in all three courts.” The council took the request under advisement until the personnel committee approves the job description.

The County Council also made some changes to a few other county jobs.

The first deputy recorder had a 29-cent-per-hour pay raise approved by the council. The increase is designed to bring the pay in line with that of first deputies in the Assessor’s and Treasurer’s offices, whose jobs are similar. The council also approved some updates to the job description.

Additionally, the council approved changing the victim assistance investigator position in the Prosecutor’s Office to a victim assistance coordinator, who’ll have some additional duties. They also set a pay rate for the updated job.

The council also decided to waive a 90-day probationary pay period for a Health Department employee who moved from part-time to full-time status. The change was driven by a state mandate for breastfeeding education, and the increase in cost was covered by a grant. The council had approved the increase in hours in May, and the change took effect October 5. However, county policy requires that full-time employees serve a 90-day probationary period at reduced pay. The council voted to allow the employee to continue with the increased hours at the same pay rate, skipping the probationary period.

Additionally, the deputy clerks in the civil and criminal divisions of Superior Court II had their job descriptions updated.
