Candidates wishing to fill the District 1 Marshall County Council seat vacated by Sheriff Matt Hassel have until Friday at noon to file their paperwork in the county clerk’s office. The district represents German and Bourbon Townships.
As of yesterday, Heath Thornton was the lone applicant for the office, according to Marshall County Clerk Debbie Vandermark. Republican Party Chair Dave Holmes says the five precinct committeemen from within the district will choose Hassel’s replacement during a caucus on Tuesday, Oct. 20 at 6 p.m.
Hassel officially handed over his gavel to council vice president Don Morrison Monday morning. He ran the meeting, but the council opted to wait to reorganize until after Hassel’s replacement is named. Unless they call a special meeting, that will occur during their November session.
