Construction Progressing on Culver Water Treatment Facility

culver-town-hallConstruction is moving along for the Town of Culver’s new Water Treatment Facility.

An update was provided to Council members from the engineers overseeing the project during Tuesday night’s Culver Town Council meeting. The Town issued bonds for the $2.2-million project, and received funding from the Culver Redevelopment Commission to complete the work.

Mark Sullivan from Midwest Engineers says the new water tank for the facility has been erected, but paint is still needed.

“Painting is weather dependent,” says Sullivan. “Cold temperatures make it so you can’t do that. My hunch is it will be spring before we get it painted.”

Water rates in Culver were raised earlier this year to help repay the 20-year note.

According to the discussion, crews working at the site have experienced problems with turkey buzzards. Around 40 birds have made themselves at home at the Water Treatment Facility, prompting calls to the Department of Natural Resources for help moving them from the site.

Sullivan does say, however, progress has been seen with other portions of the project.

“They’ve torn down the old garage, they’ve driven the helical piers down in, they’re getting ready to pour foundations, a lot of the discharge piping that will come off of the new filters and go out through the new system, that’s been run,” says Sullivan.

Concrete footings are expected to be laid in the near future.

The Culver Town Council approved a claim of $14-thousand payable to Michiana Contracting, the company performing the work, during Tuesday night’s meeting.
