The Culver-Union Township Public Library is holding an essay competition in honor of Andrew Carnegie.
It’s open to students in sixth through eighth grade who live or attend school in Union Township. As part of the competition, students are asked to type a 300- to 500-word essay answering the question, “How did Andrew Carnegie’s philanthropy impact the nation’s libraries?” The library says essays will be evaluated by an impartial panel of judges, not library staff or board members.
The first place winner will receive $100, the second place winner will get $50, and the third place winner will get $25. The prizes will be awarded at the library’s Holiday Open House December 5, where winners will have the chance to read their essays.
To enter the competition, students need to turn in their essay by November 2, along with a student entry form which can be picked up at the library.
The contest is part of the Culver-Union Township Public Library’s Centennial Year Celebration.
