A new roadside memorial on U.S. 30 just east of Oak Road in Plymouth marks a life lost in that spot 20 years ago this month. Indiana State Police Master Motor Carrier Inspector Ralph “Ray” Reed had stopped to inspect a semi tractor-trailer and was struck and killed by an oncoming semi hauling cattle. He was the first ISP Motor Carrier Inspector to be killed in the line of duty.
Generous donations from P&S Concrete of Plymouth and Ozinga Ready Mix Concrete made it possible to refurbish the memorial. ISP officials, friends and family members dedicated it during a Sunday afternoon ceremony. Bremen Post Master Trooper Kevin Kubsch said during the ceremony, “I was here on that terrible day and we lost a great man. The Indiana State Police will never ever forget the sacrifice that Ray Reed made.”
The dedication closed with a prayer and the presentation of a wreath by former ISP troopers Dave Latimer and Bob Ruff that was donated by Plymouth FOP #195.
