Work to at least one sign in Plymouth welcoming visitors to the city has been completed.
The Plymouth Board of Works approved a sign to be placed in the roundabout at Michigan Road and Veteran’s Parkway earlier this year. The goal was to improve the look of the community while greeting those traveling to the area.
In addition to the sign at the roundabout, two gateway signs would be placed on the outskirts of the city.
Initial Plans called for the sign to be placed in the center of the roundabout at a cost of $100-thousand. The contractor tasked with the work, however, recommended that it would be easier to place the sign on the southwest edge of the roundabout.
A committee consisting of several community members and city officials was tasked with finding locations for the signs and to develop their look. Members signed off on the change to the southwest corner of the space.
Construction work to complete the signs took a couple of weeks with a tree being removed to make room for the display.
The City had to first ask permission of the neighboring property owner so workers and equipment could access the land where the sign would be placed.
The City of Plymouth will maintain the area in the roundabout and the grass next to the sign once it grows. Mayor Mark Senter was unavailable for comment on the final design.
Several billboards will also be utilized to help promote the community on various highways.
