If you would like to learn something new, the People’s University of Marshall County is starting classes soon. The People’s University is a collection of lifelong learning classes on a variety of topics held throughout the county.
Program coordinator Janis Holiday says there’s something for everyone, “We have a lot of computer classes, from beginner to the latest technology, Windows 10, all that stuff. We have a lot of arts and leisure classes, including painting, crocheting, wood carving, drawing, all kinds of things like that.”
She says, even if you can’t commit to a weekly class, there are still plenty of opportunities to take part, “Some of them are once a week for that time period for six or eight weeks. Some of them are just a one-time thing. Most of them actually are probably a one-time thing.”
Holiday says there’s no cost for many of the classes, but some of them have a small fee, “They are basically to cover costs. For example, we have one where you learn to make a fairy garden, which is like a new craze all over the place. It’s $25, but then you make your garden and you take it home with you. So most of them that have costs, you are actually getting something and taking it home.”
She says even though the program is affiliated with the Marshall County Council on Aging, classes are open to all ages, “Because at least Plymouth and some of the other surrounding areas have like a week-long fall break, we do have some classes during that week that are geared towards, say, kids and grandparents do it together, that kind of thing. So anyone can sign up, and you’d be hard-pressed not to find something in here that you would like to do.”
Classes start September 8 and run through the end of October. Schedules can be found on the Plymouth Public Library’s website.
