Blessings in a Backpack is an organization that aims to grant every school-aged child in America the nourishment needed to learn and grow. Their mission is to mobilize communities, individuals and resources to provide food on the weekend for elementary school children across the nation who might otherwise go hungry.
January through May of last year approximately 60 students from Culver Elementary were assisted receiving more than 900 meals full of nutritious essentials were provided. This year the numbers are expected to rise, due to the fact that there is still as great need. In a school board meeting earlier this summer the board addressed the fact that Culver Elementary expects to have a 64% poverty rate. There will be plenty of students enrolled that will require the food items provided by Blessings in a Backpack.
Right now there is an immediate need for at least 15 sturdy containers with lids. These will be used for storing and transporting the foods to the school. They don’t have to be new but should be gently-used. Volunteers can pick them up or you can drop them off. In order to arrange a donation either contact Tracy Fox, Stephanie Hall or Dianne Johnson.
