Tomorrow at 10:30 am Eastern the Culver-Union Township Public Library is hosting a program that uses music and canine companions to promote safety education. The Kasey Program uses black Labrador Retrievers to teach children practical safety methods in a memorable way. Children learn the ‘stop, drop and roll’ routine along with other safety tips dealing with fire and animal safety.
The program began when the, now retired, fire-fighter Jeff Owens noticed that the original Kasey dog could sit, lay down, and roll over so he brought her along to teach the children. He now uses multiple dogs in his presentations as well as the guitar and his song writing skills.
During the Indiana Emergency Responders Conference in 2014, Owens received the Fire and Safety Educator of the Year Award on behalf of the Kasey Program. This year the program is being recognized by the Indiana Emergency Medical Services for Children as one of Indiana’s 2015 Heath Care Hero’s for Children.
