Freedom Park Playground Equipment Nearing Completion

The grand opening won’t be held until later this year, but renovations on Phase One of Freedom Park in Plymouth are nearing completion.

Upgrades at the park started a few years ago when a group of citizens wanted to consider the possibility of the City of Plymouth having its first all-inclusive playground. Fundraisers were conducted, allowing the group to raise enough money for the City of Plymouth to begin contributing.

Plymouth Park Superintendent Michael Hite says some additional work is needed prior to an official opening.

“We just got to do some logistics and we need to get the park cleaned up from construction, but once it gets all cleaned up we’ll plan an official Grand Opening,” says Hite.

There are three phases in the Freedom Park Master Plan. Phase One – which consists of installing playground equipment is expected to cost around $250-thousand.

Work is running a little behind at the park, but the equipment is expected to be constructed by late next week. To do this, rubber surface material under the equipment needs to be installed.

Hite says the ADA compliant space will be helpful to the entire public.

“What it’s going to do is give people the opportunity, whether it’s a child with special needs or a child that does not have special needs to be able to play with each other,” says Hite. “That’s the whole idea of it being all-inclusive.”

The concept is being developed after a windstorm partially destroyed the playground equipment at Packard Woods Park in Plymouth.
