Families are encouraged to take a stroll through the Culver Town Park and enjoy a story. Officials with the Culver-Union Township Public Library cut the ribbon on the StoryWalk along Lake Maxinkuckee on Saturday. The idea originated in Vermont. Culver-Union Township Public Library Youth Services Director Jill Gavlick says the library board and staff was looking for a special way to celebrate the centennial and came across the idea by doing a Google search.
Stories will change every two weeks from June through September. Gavlick picks the books for the StoryWalk. She says book size and length are considerations in her selections. Each post holds two laminated pages, so a book can’t be longer than 30 pages. Gavlick says size is also a consideration, as copyright laws prohibit the library from shrinking pages without permission from the author.
Gavlick hopes the StoryWalk will encourage families to get step away from the television et and computer screen, get outside, take a walk and get the imagination going.
