Authorities believe alcohol may have been a factor in a Sunday afternoon single-vehicle crash on Maple Road north of 4A.
Alfonso F. Pedraza, 24, of South Bend, was southbound on Maple, according to a police report, and crossed the center line. His 1997 Chevrolet Monte Carlo continued through the northbound lane onto the shoulder, where it hit a garbage can, a fence and a utility pole, which snapped and fell across the road. Pedraza was taken to a hospital in St. Joseph County for treatment of minor bleeding and pain throughout his body.
