State legislation that caused a national uproar is receiving comments from one of Indiana’s federal representatives.
U.S. Senator Joe Donnelly appeared in Knox on Tuesday as part of a “Donnelly Day” visit. The Democrat uses the tours to learn more about important issues facing Indiana workers.
The Senator took time to comment on the ongoing Religious Freedom Restoration Act saga. Donnelly says he’s glad a fix was put in place.
“We want to make sure that as a state we’re welcoming to everybody and we want everybody to have their hopes and dreams to come true right here,” says Donnelly.
The state bill – signed into law by Governor Mike Pence – was perceived by many in Indiana as allowing businesses to discriminate against same-sex couples.
Cities and businesses publicly considered boycotting the Hoosier State. Language clarifying the bill was enacted in an effort to prevent the perception of discrimination.
Despite being a state issue, Donnelly spoke out against the Religious Freedom Restoration Act legislation in late March.
Donnelly toured several sites on Tuesday, including meeting with firefighters in South Bend.
