Plymouth man received an enhanced sentence today in Marshall County Superior Court.
30-year-old Siamuel Stemen had allegedly admitted in July of 2014 that he beat an adult family member.
Officers were called to his LaPorte Street address in the early morning hours to find the home with tables overturned and other items in disarray. Blood was also located at the scene. Stemen was found during a secondary search hiding under a child’s bed. Investigators claim that he beat his family member with enough severity to create a risk for death.
Even while awaiting sentencing, Stemen was classified as a “Maximum Risk” inmate and received discipline for allegedly battering another inmate.
Stemen was being charged with aggravated battery in the case, but according to documents from the Marshall County Attorney’s office, the state dropped a charge of Attempted Murder and Strangulation in exchange for a guilty plea.
Considerations in his trial, however, determined he had at least six prior felony convictions – making him a habitual offender. He has previously served at least 12 ½ years in prison for those offenses.
The victim in the current case indicated in court that the exchange for a guilty plea was appropriate.
Judge Robert Bowen sentenced Stemen to 26 years in prison – 10 of which were an enhancement for his prior convictions.
