A LaPorte County school was placed on lockdown earlier today after a student located a bullet on a classroom floor.
The incident occurred shortly after 9:00 a.m. at New Prairie High School. The student who located the bullet notified the principal. A search of all lockers in the building, along with book bags that had been in the classroom where the bullet was found was conducted.
This was the first time a bullet had been found in New Prairie schools. The bullet was identified as a single .357 magnum round.
The search was conducted by members of the New Prairie staff with members of the Sheriff’s Office providing security according to information released by the LaPorte County Sheriff’s office.
A K-9 unit was brought in to assist with any potential explosive devices. The lockdown was lifted by 11:15 a.m.
No other bullets were found in the building. LaPorte County Sheriff John Boyd said the search was conducted out of an abundance of caution.
An investigation is ongoing.
