A chemical plant in Warsaw caught fire on Friday, prompting a response by multiple police and fire agencies.
Warsaw Chemical Company saw the plant fire followed by an explosion which ruptured tanks containing potentially hazardous chemicals Friday morning. According to a release from the Department of Natural Resources Law Enforcement Divisoin, eight people, including firemen, were treated at Koscuisko Community Hospital for chemical inhalation and skin irritation.
Chemicals are thought to have made their way into the storm drains and into Winona Lake, creating colors in the water. The exact figure is unknown at this time, but estimates put the gallons in the thousands.
Oxygen will be introduced into the lake to evaporate contaminants. Warsaw Police and Fire Departments are investigating the incident.
