Secretary of State Stresses Importance of Financial Cybersecurity

The Indiana Secretary of State’s office is reminding residents of the importance of understanding how to protect their personal financial information.

According to a press release, 62-percent of state-registered investment adviser firms have participated in a cybersecurity risk assessment.

Indiana Secretary of State Connie Lawson says an increasing reliance on technology could leave an individual’s financial information vulnerable to theft.

A survey from the North American Securities Administrators Association says 77-percent of firms had established internal policies related to cybersecurity.

Lawson recommends asking questions of the firm with which you have money, including whether the firm has addressed which threats could impact their business, and if clients are notified via electronic messaging to authenticate instructions.
