Honor Rewards Program Looks to Be In Full Swing by November

The Marshall County Recorder’s office continues to push a recently developed program to help veterans.

The County Commissioners approved the request to implement an “Honor Rewards Program” in Marshall County earlier this year. The idea is to supply veterans with rewards cards upon sign-up that afford them discounts at local businesses.

Recorder Marlene Mahler says she recently sent letters out to businesses notifying them of the opportunity.

“Right now we’re just getting started and the press release is to let the veterans know that hopefully we have a lot of merchants signed up by the first of November and we can have something really going good for the veterans,” says Mahler.

The program is run through one of Marshall County’s contractors, but participation is new this year. 32 Indiana counties also contract with Marshall County’s contracting company, meaning the Honor Rewards Cards may also be used in those counties. Certain counties in Michigan and Ohio may also offer the service for those traveling out of state.

The Veteran’s Affairs department in Marshall County is also playing a major role helping veterans to sign-up to receive the discounts. Many of the discounts are expected to be small, such as a percentage off a meal, or a service.

Mahler says no tax dollars are being used to fund the service.

“The money obviously comes from the merchants and what kind of discount they want to give to our veterans, but my office signs them up and it’s a way for all of us to say thank you to those who have given so much to our country,” says Mahler.

Sign-up can take place in the Marshall County Recorder’s office, but can also be completed online by searching “Honor Rewards.”

Some of Marshall County’s neighboring counties are also participating.
